EN471 – HIGH VISIBILITY WARNING CLOTHING
What is EN471?
EN471 is a law which instructs anyone is a dangerous work-situation to wear High-Visibility clothing so the wearer can be seen clearly by everyone and everything.
There are 3 levels of Hi-Vis clothing – High risk (Class 3), Intermediate risk (Class 2) and Minimum risk (Class 1).
Why would you wear High-VisibilityMatrix2015 clothing?
By wearing the correct type of Hi-Vis clothing (all depending on what kind of job you have) – you can will hopefully stay safe and avoid danger. (*plus, it’s the law.)
Normally the colour of your Hi-Vis clothing isn’t important (yellow vs. orange) - The key thing, is the clothing has a combination of reflective and fluorescent materials.
When would you wear the specific Types of Hi-Vis clothing?
If you work On or Near motorways, dual-carriage ways, or airports – you should wear Class 3 Hi-Vis clothing (normally a Full-sleeved jacket or full-length trousers with at least 4 meters of 5cm reflective tape sewed in).
If you work On or Near A and B class roads, or if you are a delivery driver – you should wear Class 2 Hi-Vis clothing (normally a vest with at least 2.6 meters of 5cm reflective tape sewed in).
If you work On or Near a private road – you should wear Class 1 Hi-Vis clothing (normally a vest or trousers with at least 2 meters of 5cm reflective tape sewed in).
It’s important to note that you can also wear these with Class 2 and/or Class 3 Hi-Vis clothing.

EN ISO 20471:2013 - HIGH VISIBILITY
Summary of the main updates to the new EN ISO 20471 standard:

EN ISO 20471 Performance parameter:
Class 3: Highest Level Highest level of protection - required for any persons working on or near motorways or dual-carriage ways or airports. Must incorporate a minimum of 0.80m2 of background material and 0.20m2 of retro-reflective materials. (4 metres of 5cm wide reflective tape)
Class 2: Intermediate Level required for any persons working on or near A and B class roads, also for delivery drivers. Must incorporate a minimum of 0.50m2 of background material and 0.13m2 of Retroreflective material. (2.60 metres of 5cm wide reflective tape)
Class 1: Minimum Level Minimum level of protection required for any persons working on a private road or to be used in conjunction with a higher classed garment. Must incorporate a minimum of 0.14m2 of background material and 0.10m2 of retroreflective material. (2 metres of 5cm wide reflective tape)
